Derby boss Wayne Rooney says he is 'flattered' to be linked with the Everton vacancy but says there has been no approach from the Merseyside club.

The 36-year-old former Toffees striker has been linked with the job following Rafael Benitez's dismissal.

The ex-England international's stock has risen after keeping the Rams in contention for survival in the Championship despite being docked 21 points for entering administration and breaching financial regulations.

Rooney said: 'I'm the same as everyone else, I see the speculation on social media and in the newspapers. Of course Everton is a club I grew up supporting.

'I'm flattered to get brought up in those conversations, but I know Everton know that to have any communication with me they have to go through the administrators.'

Rooney added: 'Everyone loves a fairytale, but my focus is on tomorrow. I must treat this game with the utmost respect.'

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is looking for his sixth manager since taking over the club, are sacking Benitez at the weekend.

Benitez spent less than seven months in charge at Goodison Park and lost his job following Saturday's 2-1 loss at Norwich, a ninth defeat in 12 Premier League games.

The Toffees now sit just six points above the relegation zone, with former Liverpool boss Benitez paying the price for the poor run of form and interim boss Duncan Ferguson has now been put in temporary charge for the club's 'upcoming games', starting with Saturday's visit of Aston Villa.

Along with Rooney, it has been reported that ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard are set to be interviewed for the full-time job.

It was also revealed that the Toffees have interviewed former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro for their vacant managerial role. Sky Sports also reported on Tuesday that Jose Mourinho was on the Toffees' shortlist, only to later claim he is not prepared to leave Roma anytime soon.

Now the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss has confirmed he would not swap his project at the Stadio Olimpico for 'any other'right now.

‘In terms of emotion, passion, empathy, of being happy working with Roma, I say I am 11 out of 10,' he said on Thursday.

‘I am truly, very, very happy to be at a club where I feel the people trust me. I couldn’t be happier than this.

‘In football terms, playing to finish between fourth and eighth place is obviously not what I want, but this is a moment of a different project for me and we will be better off next season.

‘I won’t deny in the first half I did feel frustrated, as our performance was horrible.

‘Having said that, I am happy right now and would not change this Roma project for any other.

‘I gave my word for these three years and I will not leave before the three years are up. This is my project too.’
