Werner blames Tuchel's tactics and a lack of playtime for his Chelsea exit

Timo Werner has put his Chelsea exit down to a lack of playtime and not fitting Thomas Tuchel's system, after the German striker returned to his old club RB Leipzig.

Werner was largely disappointing in his time at Stamford Bridge, scoring 23 goals in 89 games after joining for £47.5 million.

There were high points, though, as he scored four goals in the Blues' Champions League winning campaign in 2021.

He told the Einfach Luppen podcast: 'For me, the fun of playing football is in the foreground. Of course, I had great success at Chelsea, but the fun got a bit lost in the end because I didn't play regularly anymore.

'I think the coach's system of play didn't suit me perfectly. That's why it was clear to me that I wanted to take a new step. I'm at an age where I want to play as much as I can.'

Despite failing to live up the hype in West London, Werner still has fond memories of his time in the Premier League. He said: 'I really associate very great successes with Chelsea – the greatest of my career.

'It will always be a special club for me. I will also stay in touch with many of the players from the team.

The 26-year-old is now back at the club where he made his name. Werner scored 95 goals inn 159 games in his first spell at Leipzig, and has already picked up a goal in his first game back at the club.

Werner's criticism of Tuchel was light compared to his former teammate Romelu Lukaku, who told Sky Sports Italia in December that he was 'not happy' with the manager while still a Chelsea player.

Having lost both Lukaku and Werner this summer, Thomas Tuchel is now looking to bring in a replacement striker, with the Blues currently linked with former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
