What next for James Rodríguez at León? director hints at possible renewal

James Rodríguez’s future remains a mystery. The Colombian midfielder currently has a contract with Club León, which runs until December 31. The player and his entourage have not yet made a decision on whether to remain with the Mexican club or, alternatively, seek another option elsewhere.

Rodrigo Fernández, the Guanajuato club’s sporting director, addressed the midfielder’s situation. While he didn’t provide any definitive information on the player’s contractual situation, Fernández left the door open for negotiations to be held in the coming months to find the best solution for both sides.

The player has spoken directly with the president [Jesús Martínez Murguía], this is just beginning, but I think that as things happen, we will see what will happen with James,” Fernández said in comments which were picked up by TV Azteca.

To date, James has played 23 matches with León, 20 in Liga MX and 3 in the Leagues Cup. The player has contributed 10 goals, scoring three and providing seven assists. His next match will be this Monday, when the team hosts Rayados de Monterrey.

Fernández regrets Mendoza’s departure

Rodrigo Fernández himself described the current transfer market as one of the worst since he took over the team. The sporting director stated that it has been extremely difficult to sign players and claimed that the surprising departure of several figures such as Steven Mendoza, who signed for Parananense, also affected his plan.

I think it’s been the toughest market since I’ve been here, even though we have a team that did very well at times in the Clausura and then slumped, but it has been a tough market for us. The responsibility has been mine in the sense that we already had the players, they were almost agreed upon, everything was in place, and for one reason or another, they fell through,” he explained.

“We’ve been working at full speed, and of course, that’s reflected. Starting with the departure of players who weren’t planned, like Mendoza, an important player, and of course, there were others, but for one reason or another, they didn’t make it. Time has been lost, because this is about adaptation, and every time a player arrives late, it always takes them some time to adapt,” he concluded.
