Which players have made the BEST and WORST XIs of EPL round 3?

  /  Geralt

Three weeks have already passed since the start of the Premier League and some teams are already starting to give hints of how they will perform for the season.

BEST XI

Goalkeeper: Angus Gunn (Southampton)

Southampton got their first in of the new season and first clean sheet, with Angus Gunn performing admirably in goal. The Englishman was one of just three goalkeepers to keep their respective sheets clean this weekend.

Right-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Liverpool terrorised Arsenal’s backline on Saturday, with Trent Alexander-Arnold key to the Reds’ attack. The full-back peppered in 13 crosses and corners, setting up Joel Matip’s header with one for the opening goal.

Centre-back: Paul Dummett (Newcastle United)

Newcastle frustrated Tottenham in their 1-0 away win and a big part of their rearguard was Paul Dummett. The 27-year-old was a rock at the back, helping to keep Tottenham’s front line quiet, with two interceptions to add to a massive 12 clearances.

Centre-back: Fabian Schar (Newcastle United)

Alongside Dummett at the back for Newcastle and our Best XI is Fabian Schar. The Swiss centre-back made three blocks, two interceptions and seven clearances while also winning three tackles to frustrate Harry Kane and co.

Left-back: Emerson (Chelsea)

Emerson’s improvement under Frank Lampard continued with the Italian putting in a solid performance to help Chelsea gain their first win of the season. The left-back was key in both defence and attack, creating four chances while also winning five tackles.

Central midfielder: Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea)

Another Chelsea player to have improved under Lampard, Mateo Kovacic enjoyed possibly his best performance to date for the Blues. The Croatian was a big influence in the Chelsea midfield in moving the ball forward and set up Tammy Abraham’s winner with a delightful pass.

Central midfielder: David Silva (Manchester City)

Spaniard on form against Bournemouth on Sunday. The 33-year-old set up two of City’s goals and completed 91.53% of his attempted passes.

Central midfielder: James Maddison (Leicester City)

James Maddison followed his fine performance against Chelsea last weekend with another stellar showing as Leicester beat Sheffield United. The English midfielder created two chances, recorded one assist, and also completed five take-ons.

Attacking midfielder: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Mohamed Salah was the bane of David Luiz at the weekend, causing the Brazilian constant problems. The Egyptian capped off a good performance with two goals to keep Liverpool’s perfect start up, showing the form which has made him so dangerous for the Reds

Striker: Sebastien Haller (West Ham United)

West Ham United finally look to have a prolific striker, with Sebastien Haller getting off the mark against Watford. The Frenchman grabbed two goals at Vicarage Road and gave Watford’s defence a tough afternoon both on the floor and in the air.

Striker: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

Sergio Aguero continued his good start to the season with another two goals to propel Man City up to second. Both came via instinctive finishes from close range, but Aguero also looked to set up team-mates, creating three chances.

Worst XI

Goalkeeper: Dean Henderson (Sheffield United)

Sheffield United were handed their first defeat of the season by Leicester City and, looking back on his performance, Dean Henderson will surely wish he had been more influential. The Manchester United loanee failed to make a single save against Leicester, allowing Jamie Vardy to beat him at his near post.

Right-back: Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Arsenal)

Ainsley Maitland-Niles had a tough task in trying to keep Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane quiet at Anfield and struggled largely. The utility man was also predominantly anonymous going forward, unable to help Arsenal’s cause.

Centre-back: David Luiz (Arsenal)

After a strong performance last weekend, David Luiz showed Arsenal fans a glimpse of where he can be dangerous to his own team. The Brazilian was given the runaround by Salah and conceded a silly penalty on the Egyptian for a needless shirt pull.

Centre-back: Davinson Sanchez (Tottenham Hotspur)

Although Tottenham’s attack will take a lot of the blame for their defeat to Newcastle, the defence must also receive their share. Davinson Sanchez was arguably the weakest leak of Spurs’ back line, struggling to deal with Joelinton and co.

Centre-back: Chris Basham (Sheffield United)

When going up against a team including Vardy, it is key for defenders to not be sloppy in their own half. But Chris Basham was lax at the back, losing the ball in the build up to Vardy’s opening goal, setting Sheffield United up for defeat.

Left-back: Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

Although Luke Shaw did have to go off injured against Crystal Palace, the Manchester United left-back’s performance was poor. The Englishman struggled once again in both defence and attack and looks far from the promising player he once was.

Central midfielder: Dani Ceballos (Arsenal)

Like David Luiz, Dani Ceballos followed up a stellar performance with one to forget against Liverpool. The Spaniard was overrun at Anfield and showed some sloppiness on the ball, unable to work his magic.

Central midfielder: Andre Gomes (Everton)

When Andre Gomes’ permanent signing was announced in the summer, Everton fans were delighted. But the midfielder’s poor start to the new season continued with another underwhelming performance against Aston Villa, with Gomes struggling to get a grip on the game.

Central midfielder: Jesse Lingard (Manchester United)

Up against a stern Crystal Palace side, Manchester United needed a player capable of unlocking the defence, but Jesse Lingard was not that man. The 26-year-old had a forgettable game and was dealt with expertly by the Palace defence.

Striker: Florin Andone (Brighton & Hove Albion)

Some players make our worst XI for all-round poor performances, but Florin Andone lasted just 30 minutes against Southampton before getting sent off. The striker was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Yan Valery which gave his side an even bigger task.

Striker: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Harry Kane was expected to get amongst the goals against Newcastle at the weekend, but the Englishman was largely anonymous. He managed just one shot on goal, which he missed, and had 24 touches.
