Why isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo at the Club World Cup but Messi is?

The Club World Cup is officially about to begin, and among the big stars set to feature in the tournament are Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and other top names. However, one major figure conspicuous by his absence is the Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo.

Just a few days ago, Ronaldo added another trophy to his illustrious career, winning the UEFA Nations League in a dramatic final against Lamine Yamal’s Spanish side.

There had been much speculation about the possibility of Ronaldo joining one of the 32 participating clubs as a high-profile reinforcement. However, ahead of the Nations League final, CR7 ruled out that option, stating that despite receiving several offers from various clubs, he had decided not to take part in the competition.

With that, Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the tournament’s most notable absentee. Meanwhile, his long-time rival Lionel Messi has a chance to secure what may be his last major international club title with Inter Miami — a challenge that appears daunting given the dominance of European teams, who enter the tournament as clear favourites.

In 2024, Ronaldo had one last opportunity to qualify for the Club World Cup with Al Nassr, but the dream ended in the quarter-finals after a defeat to Al-Ain — the eventual champions — who secured their spot in the tournament alongside Juventus, Manchester City, and Wydad AC.

As for Saudi Arabia, their sole representative will be Al Hilal, who earned their place back in 2021. They will face stiff competition from the likes of Pachuca, Real Madrid, and Salzburg.
