World Cup Confidential: Lionel Messi's destiny in in the World Cup final is not a given

  /  autty

Ahead of kick off between Argentina and France, the world's media continue to parade the narrative of this World Cup in Qatar building up to Lionel Messi fulfilling his destiny by winning the tournament.

The 35-year-old has the opportunity to cement his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time by claiming the one prize he has always coveted above all else.

He came close once before, losing in the 2014 final when Germany defeated Argentina after extra time thanks to a Mario Gotze goal - and has revealed this will be his final World Cup.

But, as we know, football doesn't always work out as planned, with Zinedine Zidane's infamous red card for headbutting Italy's Marco Materazzi in his final-ever game in the 2006 World Cup a prime example.

In light of this, the main topic of discussion in today's World Cup Confidential was Messi, with our writer Martin Samuel reminding everyone sport doesn't always work out as you expect it too, arguing it 'thumbs its nose at everyone's idea of destiny'.

Also in today's episode:

Our writers Martin Samuel, Rob Draper, Ian Ladyman and Oliver Holt were speaking as part of Sportsmail and MailPlus' daily videocast 'World Cup Confidential'.

It appears on MailOnline every morning of the tournament and can be found on our YouTube channel.
