Ahead of Chelsea's Premier League trip to Sunderland, manager Xabi Alonso explained why Josh Acheampong and E. Martinez were missing from the squad. He also discussed Henderson's return to the starting lineup and what he expects from the match.

Chelsea's last match before the November international break will be played at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland, who have won only one of their first nine Premier League games this season.

In their previous match, Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Compared to that game, Xabi Alonso made two changes to the starting lineup: Pep Chavarría replaced Josh Acheampong in defense, and Henderson came in for Estêvão.

Before the match, Xabi Alonso was asked why Josh Acheampong was not in the squad. He replied: "He is recovering from a minor injury. He is not yet physically ready to play today, but we expect him to return after the international break. It's a shame because he was in excellent form before."

E. Martinez has not played for the team since Chelsea's victory over Everton last month. The Argentine goalkeeper collided with Jarrad Branthwaite in that match and subsequently had to undergo jaw surgery.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper resumed training this week wearing a protective mask, but he is not yet fully ready to be included in the squad.

Xabi Alonso said: "He has put in a tremendous effort to be available, but bringing him in now might be too hasty and risky. He needs another week to ten days to keep training and adapt to the mask. I am confident that he will be available after the international break."

Henderson returned to Chelsea's starting lineup for this match, played in his birthplace of Sunderland against the club where he began his career. Xabi Alonso believes the English midfielder can once again play a crucial role in midfield and help the team cope with a strong opponent.

Xabi Alonso added: "Yes, I know he started his career at Sunderland. But he's playing not because he was born here, but because he is very important to the team and is performing exceptionally well right now. I am sure he will help the team today. Every game in the Premier League is tough. We know that even if you play well, you might not get the result you deserve, but that's the reality of the Premier League. Without a doubt, it will be a difficult and intense match for both sides, but we feel ready and hope to finish before the international break with a good victory."
