Xhaka reveals plan to make move back to Basel before retiring

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has revealed that he wants to finish his career at former club Basel.

The Switzerland international spent eight years at St Jakob-Park at the start of his career before earning a switch to German side Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012.

Consistent displays for club and country then saw Arsenal spend £35million on him in 2016, and despite becoming a key part of new manager Unai Emery's team, the 26-year-old has admitted that he already has eyes on the final chapter in his career.

Asked if he is hoping to play for Basel again, he told Basellandschaftliche Zeitung (via Sport Witness): 'Definitely! My career started here and there it is a goal, actually, my dream to return someday.

'That certainly won't be the case at 28, I'll be honest. It'll probably be more like Alex Frei, who's the best example of how to do it.

'He came back once he was in his thirties, but still performed and helped FCB win a few titles.

'Of course, the expectations are high when you come back again, but it is clearly a dream.'
