You are the Ref E3: Stripping to his pants... red card or not?

  /  StanLee

A veteran cult hero, who pledged to strip to his pants for charity if he scored in his farewell match, finds the net seconds before half-time. As you prepare to blow for the break, he dashes off down the tunnel, stripping as he goes. He's already on a yellow. What do you do?

Verdict for E2

A player launches a terrible red card tackle - but suffers a horrific injury in the process. As you try to control the brawl that follows, the injured player is taken off by medics before you can show a red card - and your fourth official waves through a substitution. What now?

Verdict: First, your fourth official has way overstepped the mark here: he cannot sanction substitutions independently just because you are busy – tell him in no uncertain terms that he has made a difficult situation worse.

Second, as play has not restarted, ask the substitute to leave the field of play.

Third, request a PA announcement to make clear to everyone that the injured player was dismissed. The fact that you did not actually brandish a red card before the player left the pitch is irrelevant. Your decision stands.
