Although Christophe Galtier is publicly indicating that he intends to remain Paris Saint-Germain manager next season, his position has nevertheless become increasingly precarious in the wake of an early Champions League exit and some middling spring form in the league.
According to L’Équipe this morning, only scenario in which the former Saint-Étienne coach would remain in the French capital for his second and final season would be if the club’s management were unable to secure their targets for the dugout. As a result, Galtier himself has not been informed of any intention to dismiss him as of yet, with the manager still focusing on securing a record-breaking 11th league title for the team.
Sporting advisor Luís Campos is expected to have less of a say in naming the new manager as he did when he first arrived last year, and brought his former Lille colleague Galtier with him. This time, the Qatari owners intend to have a greater influence in proceedings, although they will be wary not to step too much on Campos’ toes. As things stand, the Portuguese director is not officially on the lookout for a new coach, but is keeping an eye on potential candidates.
L’Équipe add that Zinédine Zidane remains the number one choice – the owners believe that they now have a greater chance of bringing in the midfielder legend, now that his hopes of managing the French national team ended with Didier Deschamps’ extension.
Club president Nasser Al Khelaifi, who has met with the owners to discuss the changes to be made, is himself keeping a close eye on Thiago Motta. The former PSG midfielder has impressed at Bologna this season, although there are doubts as to whether he would want to work with Luís Campos. José Mourinho would be more in line with what the Sporting Advisor is looking for, and the Roma manager is open to offers – however, the Qatari owners are looking for a calming figure after a tumultuous year. Meanwhile, Marcelo Gallardo, who had been in the running last year but was intent on seeing out his contract with River Plate, is now a free agent and could be enticed.
