During his introductory press conference as Valencia's new head coach, Javier Aguirre spoke about Mexican international Érick Lira. He stated that the Cruz Azul midfielder is a friend of his but emphasized that he could not yet comment on transfer matters.
Aguirre said, "I can't say much at the moment because I haven't accurately assessed the team's needs. I am an employee of the club and don't manage the transfer budget. I will sit down and talk with Braulio. Érick (Lira) is a friend of mine and he is excellent, but I cannot answer you right now."
Lira had already been on Valencia's radar for potential transfers before the end of the 2025/26 season. When Corberán was coaching, Lira was also on the team's transfer list, but due to various factors, especially financial issues, the deal was not easy. After Aguirre's appointment, the related rumors have resurfaced, but Lira is highly unlikely to join in the short term. The original report suggests that his characteristics would be a good fit for Valencia.
Several Mexican media outlets had previously reported that Lira had also attracted interest from Eredivisie teams. According to TV Azteca, Valencia, Sevilla, Benfica, Feyenoord, and Ajax are all monitoring him.
