The veteran player wants to appear at his fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup and believes that Mexico can make it past the quarter-finals.

Prior to each FIFA World Cup, the Mexican national team has two goals set in stone. The first is to qualify and the second is to make it past the quarter-finals at the tournament for the first time in their history. This year they are close to securing their spot in Qatar and their captain, Andrés Guardado, believes this will be the year they break that ‘curse.’

Guardado out to appear at his fifth World Cup

Mexico will resume World Cup qualifying later this month, playing on the road against Jamaica and behind closed doors against Costa Rica and Panama. Two victories and a draw will most likely secure them their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Guardado wants to be in top form to help guide the team to the semi-finals.

I want to achieve something important with the Mexico national team and this will be my last chance. There is a ‘curse’ that we haven’t been able to qualify for the semi-finals in the last four World Cups that I have played. I want to make it happen in my fifth one,” said Guardado in an interview with Sandra de la Vega, his wife.

Guardado speaks about retirement

“I have always said that I would like to retire playing for Liga MX side Atlas, but that is not up to me. I have a very good relationship with the people in charge and I almost returned in 2019, but at the end the negotiations fell apart.” Guardado’s contract with Real Betis expires on 30 June 2022.
