Arbeloa: Anyone who doesn't believe in UCL comeback should stay in Madrid

Alvaro Arbeloa has urged anyone who does not believe Real Madrid can turn around their Champions League tie against Bayern Munich to "stay in Madrid" for the second leg.

Los Blancos lost the quarter-final first leg 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Kylian Mbappe keeping Madrid's hopes alive after earlier goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane.

It was an end-to-end contest in Madrid, with both teams recording 20 shots, though Bayern were able to capitalise on poor defending from the hosts.

At the other end, Manuel Neuer was in top form for Bayern, making nine saves to keep the Bundesliga outfit ahead in the tie.

Neuer made his 136th Champions League start for Bayern, equalling Lionel Messi's total for Barcelona (136), and now only trailing Iker Casillas for most starts for a single club in the competition (149 for Madrid).

Arbeloa was frustrated by Madrid's wastefulness in front of goal, but he has full confidence they can turn things around in Germany next week.

"I think [Manuel] Neuer was MVP. We had so many chances to score more goals, but we didn't do it," said the Real Madrid boss.

"We lose two balls, and they score two goals, so we can't lose these types of balls because their players are so fast and so quick and have so much quality.

"But we're still alive, and we hope we can win in Germany.

"Anyone who doesn't believe that should stay in Madrid. I have players with a lot of personality, and the first thing they said in the locker room was that we're going to win there."

Rudiger shared Arbeloa's opinion, praising the Bayern goalkeeper while lamenting Madrid's own finishing at home.

"It's all about opening the scoring. We had chances to score more, but in the end, that's how it goes," said Rudiger.

"We need to shoot more, but on target. But today, Bayern's best player was the goalkeeper, Neuer."
