Argentina beat Brazil for the first time in a U-17 World Cup with three goals from No.10 Echeverri seeing Brazil fall to the Albiceleste for the second time in a week.
Argentina and Brazil faced up again in another high profile clash and after home defeat for the Brazil senior team earlier in the week in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, the U-17 side were keen to avenge the 0-1 Maracanã defeat.
The World Cup U-17 quarter final game in Jarkata was initially delayed as a result of a heavy waterlogged pitch which led to a half-hour delay in the game kicking off.
The current holders started stronger with Estêvão going close before Argentine captain Claudio Echeverri wearing the iconic ‘10′ shirt broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark as a shot took a wicked deflection looping over the Brazil goalkeeper.
The second half saw the River Plate player shine and deliver possibly the best individual performance of a footballer so far in the U-17 World Cup. Echeverri grew after his first goal and was a livewire buzzing around the midfield, receiving between the lines and ultimately bagging two more goals that eliminated Brazil and saw Argentina get one over on their eternal rivals for the first time ever in an World Cup U17 meeting.
Diego Placente’s side now advance to the semi-final stage where they face Germany (28 November) with both nations eyeing the possibility of glory for the first time at a FIFA U-17 World Cup.
