In one of the more exciting matches of the LaLiga Santander weekend, Athletic Club moved ever closer to European qualification with a 3-2 victory over a spirited Rayo Vallecano.
The match will be remembered for the numerous uses of VAR, with the referee being encouraged to consult the technology on no fewer than three occasions.
Whilst the technology is good to have, one of the fears was that it would make on-pitch refereeing less reliable and the evidence at the Estadio San Mames certainly backed up such a belief.
Paco Jemez was left lamenting the use of VAR on Sunday, however his team didn't do enough defensively to take points away from the Basque region.
The hosts did though have to work incredibly hard, even though they played against ten men for around 43 minutes after Luis Advincula was given his marching orders just after half time.
For both teams there was a lot on the line, the hosts looking to secure European qualification whilst Rayo Vallecano are attempting to secure their own top flight status.
This played into the hands of the neutrals as the match was sensational, and the performance of the visiting side suggests they can avoid the drop if they can replicate such levels of performance in the coming weeks.
Goals from Inaki Williams and Raul Garcia were complemented by a Jordi Amat own goal, and this eventually proved to be the difference between the two teams as goals from Alex Moreno and Raul de Tomas were cancelled out.
The victory takes Athletic Club into seventh place in the table, which when you consider the fact they were once in a relegation battle of their own this term, is quite remarkable.
