May 7, 2020, marks 20 years to the day since Atletico Madrid's relegation to the second tier of Spanish football was confirmed.
It was Real Oviedo who dealt the final blow, holding Los Rojiblancos to a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere.
We asked various sections of the Atletico media to recall their memories of one of the club's darkest days.
Alberto R. Barbero (MARCA)
"It's sometimes forgotten that [Atletico] still had two more games to play on their journey towards the Segunda," he said.
"Even if it was a disaster, at least it was a splendid disaster."
Pablo Lopez (Radio MARCA)
"During pre-season that year, I had a bet with a group of friends that Atleti were going to win LaLiga," he said.
"Yes, yes. You can get rid of me. To win LaLiga. They had a great team; the signings were great and I was a bit wrong."
Alejandro Mori (Onda Cero)
"When the match was over, I remember seeing Kiko crying with Garcia," he said.
"No one wanted to accept it and reality dawned on everyone. People were on the floor and all very affected."
Jose Maria Bonilla (Onda Madrid)
"When it was over, the fans were having a painful drink," he said.
"Two fans came up to me at the door of the cubicle and said to me: 'Don't abandon us.'"
Miguel Martin Talavera (Cadena SER)
"It's two decades since the darkest page in Atletico's history book, almost a lifetime," he said.
"We haven't always lived among the elite of European football decorating the Rojiblanco showcases with trophies."
Javier Gomara (Mundo Deportivo)
"It was a tragic season, defined by disaster in the offices which relayed itself on to the football pitch," he said.
"The Brazil team of 1970 would've also gone down that season."
