When one is asked about Atletico Madrid legends of years gone by, several names comes to mind: Adelardo Rodriguez, Paulo Futre, Fernando Torres, Luis Aragones and of course Jose Eulogio Garate.
Born in Sarandi, Argentina the former Atletico striker went on to play for Spain and spent 11 years playing for Los Colchoneros, from 1966-1977.
On Friday, Atletico Madrid celebrated their 116th anniversary and Garate spoke to Radio Marca.
"It's been a long time (116 years), I remember the old Vicente Calderon, it was incredible, Atleti always had great fans and it is without doubt one of the top ten clubs in the world."
Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano will host the 2018/19 Champions League final on 1 June.
"It's a shame that Atletico Madrid won't be in this year's final because the Champions League is a trophy desired by all Atletico fans.
"Atletico have been so close to winning it and it will surely come someday," he added.
Atletico Madrid have missed out on the Champions League on two occasions in recent years and Garate was asked whether he prefers LaLiga Santander or the Champions League.
"For me LaLiga is more important, it's your regular football and Atletico are normally there or thereabouts and competing to win it."
