Ballon d'Or reforms criteria starting 2022: Individual performance prioritized over team honours

According to the official Ballon d'Or guidelines, with 78 days remaining until the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony, the selection criteria are once again in the spotlight.

On October 27 (Beijing time/CEST), the 70th France Football Ballon d'Or ceremony will be held in London. At that time, one male player and one female player will be crowned the best players of the season. So what does a player need to do to earn this ultimate honour? Below are the judging criteria that the voting judges will use.

In 2022, the Ballon d'Or selection underwent significant reforms, with two major adjustments: the evaluation period was changed from the calendar year to the season, and the voting criteria were revised. Since 2022, the new selection criteria consider the season (August to July of the following year) and are ranked by importance. Judges are asked to rank players (including club and national team performance) sequentially according to the first criterion, the second criterion, and finally the third criterion.

Therefore, the 100 judges for the men's Ballon d'Or and the 50 judges for the women's Ballon d'Or will select their preferred players from the 30-person shortlist for their respective awards. The final results will be announced in London on October 27 (Beijing time/CEST). The suspense remains—who will ultimately prevail?
