Emerson has hardly played since joining Real Betis. The Brazilian has appeared just twice since arriving in Seville, against Rennes in the Europa League and Celta Vigo in La Liga.
That's not many minutes to evaluate the performance of a player that could play for Barcelona in 2021 if things go as planned following the two clubs' joint deal to bring the player to Europe in January.
Born in Sao Paulo in 1999, Emerson was involved in a surprising deal, which came as a result of the excellent relationship between Barça's Pep Segura and Betis' Lorenzo Serra Ferrer.
It's a complicated deal: Barça paid 12 million euros for the player but half will be paid by Betis, who will pay six million in three installments. Both clubs will own 50 percent of the players rights.
Emerson will play for Betis until 2021 -- two and a half years -- and could then move to Barça if things go well.
In 2021, Barça could sign him by paying the six million back to Betis, while Betis would then get a percentage of any future sale, too. And if Barça don't want him, Betis could keep him on a similar deal.
The shared signing could become normal in the near future. In fact, the relationship between Barça and Betis is so fluid that both clubs have spoken about working together on another player, probably an attacker. Betis would provide the first stop for South Americans in Europe, the two clubs would share the investment.
Emerson can play on either side as a full-back but his preference is the right. But coahch Quique Setien's rarely used him so far. There was a delay in him joining, though, because of the South American U20 Campeonato.
In his two appearances, he has been the final substitute to come on. Could Barça be a shop window for him on Sunday night?
