Barcelona president Joan Laporta claims they DON'T need to sell stars

Defiant Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club does not need to sell this summer despite the ongoing need to slash its wage bill.

Speaking on Thursday at the Nou Camp, alongside Director of Football Mateu Alemany, Laporta was bullish about Barça meeting targets and even talked about new signings.

He said getting Antoine Griezmann and Gerard Pique off the wage bill would save the club around €90million (£80m) next season - an amount that was still to be added to the latest league calculation of what Barcelona can spend next summer.

'We don't need to sell any important players,' said Laporta adding: 'We will reinforce the squad.'

The Barcelona president did hedge his bets slightly when he added: 'It is not strictly necessary to sell a top player this summer but the market always opens possibilities. It depends on the will of each player. But we are not obliged to sell because we think there are other solutions.'

One of those solutions appear to be persuading LaLiga to cut Barcelona more financial slack.

The club's Director of Football, Alemany, said: 'We knew when we took over we were inheriting an unsustainable wage bill and it has been reduced to 655m euros.

'The reduction will be ongoing until it stands at 60 per cent of revenue. We forecast that the wage bill will be down to €450m (£398m) by the summer which is around 60-70 per cent of revenue and is an acceptable figure.

'Now we have to try ensure that the league recognizes our effort and is flexible with us. If Javier [Tebas] talks about reducing our wage bill by €200m (£177m) from 2020-21 we are on course for that.'

Barcelona will also try to renew players' contracts spreading payments over more seasons and possibly releasing some of the higher earners – Sergio Busquets, whose contract runs out in the summer, and Jordi Alba, who has one more year left on his deal.

Laporta said that 19-year-old full-back Alejandro Balde's new contract was 'practically agreed'. He was also asked about Ansu Fati, who Sportsmail understands is the one player of Barça's crop of young internationals that the club are privately considering selling.

Publicly, he emphasized the importance of the player saying: 'We have high hopes for him and are not aware that he wants to leave.'

Laporta described a situation in which the club and LaLiga were in constant discussion over what they will be allowed to spend when they are informed of maximum allowed squad spend at the end of this season.

He said: 'We will try to get the league to relax the rules that make it impossible for us to be competitive with other rivals.

'Fair play is more benevolent in other championships. We can't register players because of the salary limit set by the league. We have adapted, but we will try to keep fighting.'

Asked about the European Super League he also struck a more conciliatory note even suggesting that UEFA take a seat at the table.

Asked if those planning a Super League were prepared to create a split in European football between teams in UEFA's Champions League and others in a new competition he said: 'We do not want to sideline UEFA.

'We want to reach a good understanding with UEFA through dialogue in order to organise an attractive competition.'
