The Catalan outfit came from a goal behind to beat the reigning Champions League holders, the first time any team has done so in La Liga for 18 months
Real Madrid’s fading La Liga aspirations are all but gone after they were stunned 2-1 by 14/1 (15.0) Girona at the Santiago Bernabeu.
A rare goal in the first half from Casemiro – just his 18th for the club – set Los Blancos on the way to what would have been their sixth consecutive league victory, with their 4/25 (1.16) price tag seemingly justified despite Santiago Solari making six changes to the starting line-up.
Girona, however, had other ideas, netting twice in the space of 10 second half minutes to stun the Champions League holders and land a huge 80/1 (81.0) shot at bet365.
Backing Real to lead at half-time but go on to lose the game would have paid out at those huge odds, which is not surprising since that is the first time all season they have led at the break in La Liga but gone on to lose.
In fact, of the 12 games they have been winning after 45 minutes this term, they have won 10 of them – proving just how extraordinary the feat achieved by Girona is.
The Catalan outfit were actually the last side to beat Real in the league after trailing at half-time, having overturned a 1-0 deficit back in October 2017 to win 2-1 at Estadi Montilivi.
Sergio Ramos also saw red for Real to add insult to injury, his 19th in the league, and the result now leaves Real eight points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
As well as that stunning 80/1 (81.0), the correct score of 2-1 would have paid out at 40/1 (41.0) with bet365 pre-match.
That, however, was the only major shock around Europe despite it being FA Cup weekend in England. All five Premier League teams in action qualified for the next round, whilst Even money (2.0) shots Millwall overcame AFC Wimbledon.
In Italy, 9/4 (3.25) Genoa dealt a huge blow to Lazio’s top four hopes with a 2-1 home win and AC Milan beat Atalanta away from home despite being 11/4 (3.75).
