Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is finalising the purchase of FC Andorra, who play in the Spanish regional leagues, according to reports.

Diari d'Andorra report that the central defender, through his company Kosmos, will take advantage of a new sporting law to take a controlling role in the club.

Recent changes to the law have enabled the player to complete the purchase and the intention is to build a club with sights on playing in the upper echelons of the Spanish league system.

The move is consistent with declarations made by the player a few weeks ago when he claimed in L’Equipe Magazine that he was exploring the possibility of acquiring a football club. The conditions of the purchase have yet to be made public but such is the news in the principality, that it makes it onto the leading daily in the area today.

Last month, the former Spain international denied reports that he was going to purchase La Liga 123 club Reus, based in Catalonia, following media speculation.

Last November, Pique told L'Équip Magazine: “We are working on two projects, one is to buy a team, I'm sorry, I cannot say more.

“The other is to create a new football competition or use an existing competition, no, seriously, I cannot say more. very beautiful projects.”

FC Andorra currently compete in the Primera Catalana – the fifth level of Spanish football – but played in the third tier between 1980 and 1998, with a Copa del Rey fourth round appearance in 1991.
