Madrid and Barça are chasing a number of trophies and will hope to add the Copa del Rey to LaLiga and the Champions League.
The draw for the Copa del Rey round of 16 takes place on Wednesday (January 8), with Real Madrid and Barcelona set to learn their opponents as they continue their push to win multiple trophies in 2024/25.
Carlo Ancelotti’s team have already won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, while both teams are taking part in the this week’s 2025 Spanish Super Cup, which takes place in Saudi Arabia.
As ever, Madrid and Barça will both expect to win the LaLiga title this season. That said, the Catalans are already five points adrift of their Clásico rivals, while Atlético Madrid are actually in pole position, a point behind their city rivals with a game in hand.
Hansi Flick’s side are all but through to the last 16 of the Champions League, while Real Madrid will expect to join them, even if they might have to go through the playoffs after a stuttering start to the league phase.
Additionally, Madrid will take part in the new-and-improved FIFA Club World Cup in the summer of 2025, which means they could end the season with seven trophies.
The Copa del Rey might not be number one on either team’s priorities, but it still represents a chance to get one over on the other in the never-ending race for majority trophies.
