Cristiano Ronaldo will contest his FA charge for slapping a mobile phone out of the hand of a teenage fan, says Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo was charged last month with a breach of FA Rule E3 relating to improper and/or violent conduct following the incident after United's defeat at Goodison Park in April.

United issued a statement at the time saying the club would support Ronaldo in his response, and Ten Hag confirmed on Wednesday: 'We spoke about that. He will not accept it.'

A FA disciplinary panel would have convened regardless of Ronaldo's response because it has been deemed a non-standard case.

It will now have to determine if the 37-year-old is guilty of the charge and, if so, decide on a punishment. That could be a ban, fine or warning.

Ronaldo's decision to fight the charge comes despite publicly apologising for his part in the incident when 14-year-old supporter Jake Harding tried to film the player on his phone as he limped off the pitch at Goodison Park.

The Portugal star angrily slapped the phone out of the boy's grasp, leaving him with a bruised hand, according to his mother Sarah Kelly.

Ronaldo apologised on social media and invited the boy to watch a game at Old Trafford as his guest. He wrote: 'It's never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing.

'Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

'I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.'

However, the boy rejected Ronaldo's invitation and his mother also criticised United's response to the incident.

Ronaldo was also cautioned by Merseyside Police over the incident after he was interviewed over allegations of assault and criminal damage.
