Di Maria downplays his assist for Messi's goal in Argentina's win over Mexico

Angel Di Maria has suggested he 'threw a turd' at Lionel Messi before the forward scored Argentina's opening goal in their win over Mexico.

Messi's second half strike broke the deadlock in his side's crunch game, a game they had to win after suffering a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the World Cup.

Di Maria set up the goal, but via The Mirror, downplayed any role in the goal that may help his side reach the last 16.

He said: 'I threw him a turd, but he always finds solutions to everything. What matters is that the ball got to him.'

Messi went onto fire past Guillermo Ochoa, sparking jubilant celebrations from Argentina players, staff and fans.

Di Maria praised his team-mate further, admitting he doesn't 'have words anymore' the describe the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.

He said: 'We had spoken a minute before [the goal]. He said they were dropping deep, narrow, inside [the area] and so the space in front of them would appear, to try to give it to him there.

'I waited for that moment to appear and gave it to him. And he scored a tremendous goal. I don't have words anymore.

Argentina will now face Poland in their final match of Group C, though it won't be an easy game with their opponent sitting on four points from their two games so far.

A win would see them through, but a draw would leave them vulnerable with Saudi Arabia behind them on only goal difference in the group table.

A defeat would see them knocked out the tournament at the first hurdle, with pressure mounting on one of the pre-tournament favourites.
