2-1

Match Report:

Konstantinos Karetsas came off the bench to make history by scoring the winning goal as Borussia Dortmund edged past Real Betis 2-1 in the Champions League.

Aitor Ruibal cancelled out Fabio Silva's goal in the second half, but Karetsas, who is the youngest Dortmund player to score a winner in the competition, settled the contest.

Serhou Guirassy missed a sitter just three minutes in, and Betis had a 14th-minute goal ruled out; Antony coolly slotted in after a pacy counter-attack, but Troy Parrott had been caught offside in the build-up.

Daniel Svensson and Nelson Deossa had attempts saved at either end as both sides continued to press, while Gregor Kobel was also alert to keep out Abde Ezzalzouli.

While neither side could find a first-half breakthrough, Silva got the opener just four minutes into the second, slotting in after Alvaro Valles had kept out Jobe Bellingham's drilled effort.

Valles kept out Karetsas shortly after, and Betis soon regained their rhythm, and Kobel had to rush out to smother Angel Ortiz's close-range attempt.

But Betis got their equaliser less than a minute later as Ruibal latched onto Ezzalzouli's fizzing cross to fire past Kobel from the angle in the 67th minute.

Dortmund refused to sit back, though, with Valles needed to keep out Bellingham, but he will feel he could have done better with Karetsas' 72nd-minute strike.

The youngster put his laces through the shot on the edge of the box, and Valles got a hand to the effort but could not stop it from hitting the back of the net.

Dortmund find their shooting boots

Heading into this match, Dortmund had only had one goalscorer, with Guirassy netting four times, and things looked like they could be getting tricky when he went off injured in the first half.

But Kovac showed no signs of panic, with Silva stepping up with another important goal, having netted the equaliser in Dortmund's Klassiker draw with Bayern Munich.

Across all competitions, only Guirassy has scored more (eight) and been directly involved in more goals (10) for Dortmund this season than Silva (nine – six goals, three assists).

This was also the first time he has been involved in two goals in a single game for BVB (53rd appearance), while his six goals this term mean he has already doubled last season's tally.

But the plaudits will go to Karetsas, who was Guirassy's 34th-minute replacement. At 18 years and 350 days, the Greek overtook Jude Bellingham's record (19y 98d) as the youngest player to net a Champions League winner for Dortmund.

And Karetsas is also the youngest Greek player to ever score in the Champions League, as he ensured Dortmund made it back-to-back wins in the competition.

Only Bellingham (four) had more shots than Karetsas (three), who also created two chances and won possession twice in the final third – a team high.
