The jubilation of Spain celebrating their 2026 FIFA World Cup victory not only echoed throughout the country but even reached underground: scientists reported seismic waves recorded in several Spanish cities after the winning goal and the final whistle.
The Brazilian Center for Geosciences stated that seismographs across Spain recorded tremors after Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute of extra time. This goal helped Spain secure their second FIFA World Cup title in Sunday's final.

Researchers analyzed data from the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC). Communications showed unusual signals related to the celebrations in cities such as Algeciras, Barcelona, Cadiz, and Granada. Sensors captured three distinct peaks during the match: after Ferran Torres's goal, after a subsequent goal disallowed by VAR, and the strongest tremor recorded after the final whistle.
Scientists explained that these tremors are an example of "human-induced seismic" activity, specifically caused by thousands of fans simultaneously jumping, cheering, and celebrating. Similar tremors were also detected when Spain defeated England in the Euro 2024 final, when goals by Nico Williams and Oyarzabal resulted in measurable ground tremors being recorded in Madrid and Barcelona.
