Ederson admits shock at Alisson being SNUBBED by Brazil interim boss

Ederson has admitted he is shocked that Alisson has been snubbed by Brazil interim boss Ramon Menezes in the latest squad for the March internationals.

The Liverpool goalkeeper, 30, has been Brazil's first-choice shot-stopper since 2016, winning the Copa America in 2019 and 61 caps for the South American nation.

Brazil's 23-man squad for their friendly against Morocco on Saturday was announced earlier this month.

The 29-year-old, who has won just 19 caps for Brazil, commented on Alisson's omission.

However, the Manchester City star insisted it is 'too early to say' whether he will replace Alisson as the first-choice goalkeeper for the national side.

Ederson said: 'The first moment I saw the list I was surprised, but it's the coach's decision. They are choices, I thought he would be on the list, but he was not.

'I do not know why, if it is a matter of opportunities for younger players. But we have to work, give our best, every day there is a good new player who can take that responsibility too.

'I think it's too early for that [talk of him being number one]. Of course it is always important to start a cycle, for me it is no different and I hope to start in the best way possible.

'But we know it is a long cycle, many things can happen, you can live many phases during this period.

'You have to work as hard as possible, maintain consistency so you can be here as many times as possible.'

Alisson was the preferred option in goal for the previous manager, however Tite left after Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup in Qatar at the quarter-final stage.

He has experienced a poor season with Liverpool, while Ederson is still fighting on three fronts for trophies - the Premier League title race, FA Cup and Champions League quarter finals.

It comes as Ederson admitted the uncertainty over who will become Brazil's next coach has caused anxiety among the squad.

He added that he and his team mates had discussed the 'big possibility' of Carlo Ancelotti taking the top job.

Brazil's federation issued a statement in February denying a report they had reached a verbal agreement with Ancelotti, who is under contract at Real Madrid until 2024.

'There is a big possibility that he comes,' Ederson told reporters ahead of the game against Morocco.

'What I've been told about him is that he's an exceptional coach, that everyone in the group likes, he's a guy who has a very successful career, just look at his CV. We will see in the near future if he will be here or not.

'I hope we can have a new coach quickly. I feel the anticipation too because there's too much speculation. Is it a Brazilian or a foreign coach? We are also living in a phase of anxiety.'
