Eibar leave Gijon with defeat and injuries

  /  autty

Sporting Gijon earned a 2-0 victory over Eibar on Thursday lunchtime to become the first team to defeat a LaLiga Santander side in the 2018/19 edition of the Copa del Rey.

There had already been seven matches pitting a top-flight side against an opponent from the lower leagues and six of the LaLiga Santander teams earned victories, with Levante's 1-1 draw at Lugo being the other result.

For Eibar, this match was frustrating not only because of the result and the tough task they now face to remain in the Copa del Rey, but also because of the injuries they suffered.

Right-back Jordi Calavera, who had only just returned from injury, had to go off after eight minutes with an injury, before centre-back Ivan Ramis was substituted off in the 35th minute with an injury of his own.

The third substitution was then used at the break to take off Pape Diop, suggesting that the midfielder may have suffered a knock as well.

For those Eibar players who didn't succumb to injury, this was a wasted opportunity, as a bright start led to nothing, before Sporting got the goals after the break.

The first came from Uros Durdevic in the 54th minute, with the Serbian collecting a half-clearance and finishing from inside the area.

Sporting sought a second goal and they got it six minutes from time when Alvaro Jimenez unselfishly squared the ball to Neftali Manzambi to round off a counter-attacking move.

It made this an impressive victory for the second division side, while making this a bank holiday to forget for Eibar.
