Espanyol youth coach Moisés Hurtado has hit out at the Barcelona striker after he won a contentious Champions League penalty on Wednesday.
Former Espanyol player Moisés Hurtado, who is now a coach in Los Pericos' youth academy, has said Luis Suárez "should be banned for life" after the Barcelona striker won a contentious penalty in his side's Champions League last-16 victory over Lyon on Wednesday night.
Suárez gets penalty despite seeming to step on defender
In the first half of Barça's 5-1 second-leg win at the Camp Nou, referee Szymon Marciniak awarded the hosts a spot-kick for Jason Denayer's challenge on Suárez - a decision that was upheld after a VAR review - despite replays suggesting it was the Uruguyan who fouled the defender.
In a Twitter post published in the aftermath of the incident, Hurtado fumed: "There's L. Suárez... a player who should be banned for life for always trying to fool the referee - and managing to do so, with and without VAR - leaving his side with one foot in the next round... And [still] no defender puts him into row Z!!!"
No penalty, says AS resident ref Iturralde
Speaking on Spanish radio station Cadena SER, AS' resident referee, retired FIFA official Eduardo Iturralde González, said of the decision: "For me it’s not a penalty because it’s Suárez who initiates contact by standing on the defender."
Barcelona into last eight for 12th year on the trot
The penalty was duly converted by Lionel Messi, before goals by Philippe Coutinho, Gerard Piqué, Ousmane Dembélé and another for Messi ensured Barça progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals for the 12th season in a row.
