Anice Badri wrapped up a sensational comeback for Esperance in a heated second leg final at the Stade Olypique de Rades on Friday
Starting the tie 3-1 down from the first leg, Esperance flipped the Caf Champions League final on its head and convincingly won 3-0 against their much-fancied Egyptians.
Esperance had it all to do after losing the first-leg in rather controversial fashion, and started very promisingly with a few high balls into the Ahly box.
In the 12th minute, a curling shot from outside the box from Mohamed Belailli forced Ahmed El Sharaawy to get down and make the save.
The Tunisians didn’t led up and were able to stretch the visiting defence from time to time with a few defence-splitting passes but it yielded no fruitful outcome.
Ahly, with the first-leg advantage struggled to find any penetration in attack, but was reduced to thorough defensive work in the opening quarter mark.
On the stroke of halftime, Esperance found the breakthrough when Saad Beguir fired home from close range inside the box to bring the home crowd to wildness.
In the second half, Esperance came up with their tails up their sleeve and Ahly continued to battle to finding spaces to orchestrate any avenues.
After a few scary instances, Esperance eventually increased their lead when Beguir connected with a cross from the right to guide past El Sharaawy to put them in the driving seat.
Good passages on the edge of the box played in Beguir and the latter nearly crept in his hat-trick but unluckily missed goal by a whisker.
In the final phase, Ahmed Badri brought down a long pass to the box and skipped a few players before bringing the best out of El Sharaawy who came up with a good save.
The victory was completed with five minutes to go when Badri finished off a fast-pace counterattacking move with a top-drawer finish to give them their first African title since 2011.
