Rio Ferdinand believes Trent Alexander-Arnold must reset and return to the basics of the game to re-discover his form for Liverpool and England.
The right-back made a horrific blunder in the Reds' 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid on Tuesday night, heading a Toni Kroos long-range pass into the path of eventual goalscorer Marco Asensio for the hosts' second goal of the evening.
The 22-year-old's struggles with consistency at various points of the season also cost him a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for last month's World Cup qualifiers.
Alexander-Arnold has also seen his season disrupted by injuries and coronavirus, but speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand urged him to learn from the difficult patch he has endured this season, but remained adamant he will recapture his best form.
Speaking about Liverpool's defeat in the Spanish capital in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Zinedine Zidane's men, Ferdinand said: 'Hopefully they'll learn from this and I think we've all been there at those young stages of our careers.
'Trent Alexander-Arnold, he's going to be seeing things now, he had a great run, he's under a bit of pressure now, it's about learning.
'I've been in the position when you make mistakes and you look back, these are elementary, fundamentals, that you should have locked down in your game because you're playing at that level but sometimes you have to reset, look at it, go back to basics and simplify my game a bit, especially from the defending perspective.
'Things will be alright, I'm sure things will turn around for him, but he's got to see that, work it out and then go on.'
Glenn Hoddle meanwhile believes Alexander-Arnold is struggling because he is still learning the position on the job, which he insisted is much harder to do well with his side having endured a slump in form since the turn of the year.
'The problem is sometimes that you're having to learn on the job and that's difficult when results aren't going your way,' Hoddle said.
'You can learn on the job when you're winning and you're a confident side and you enjoy it.
'Unfortunately at the moment for Liverpool, with the different combinations they have, it's not worked for him.'
Joe Cole meanwhile believes Alexander-Arnold is missing the presence of Reds captain Jordan Henderson in the team, with the England midfielder in a race against time to be fit for the Euros after undergoing groin surgery at the end of February.
'I think he's missed Henderson massively, Trent,' Cole added. 'You underestimate the job Henderson does with his legs, he has the ability so Trent isn't second guessing when he goes forward.
'Now, he's worried, and that split second of doubt puts him in an uncomfortable position and then the confidence goes.
'Rio's right, it's mistakes that can be made - he's young and he's still an unbelievable talent, he's had a great, great start to his career.'
