Flick intends to renew Barcelona contract in 'last step' of his career

Hansi Flick fully intends to renew his contract with Barcelona, outlining his hope that his current job with the Blaugrana will be the "last step" in his coaching career.

Flick's current deal is due to expire at the end of next season, but with his side closing in on back-to-back LaLiga title wins, there is a desire from both parties to extend his stay.

Ahead of facing Celta Vigo at Camp Nou on Wednesday, Barca need a maximum of 13 points to retain their domestic crown, with seven matches remaining.

Flick's side averaged 2.31 points per game in LaLiga last season (88 in 38), a figure they have bettered this season with 2.55 (79 in 31). They have also averaged more goals per game this season (2.71, 84 in 31) than they did last campaign (2.68, 102 in 38).

Asked on Tuesday if he planned to stay in Catalonia beyond next season, Flick said: "It's my plan, of course.

"I've said it and I'm 100% honest; this is going to be my last step in my career. Right now, I feel great. I would like to renew, but this is not the time to talk about that."

Barca only have the LaLiga title to play for over the remainder of the season, having been dumped out of the Champions League by rivals Atletico Madrid in the last eight.

And Flick wants to stay at the club until they regain Europe's premier club trophy, as well as for the end of the renovations to their Camp Nou home.

"It's a big dream. There are two things I would like and one, of course, is to win the Champions League," he said.

"I think we can and we have a great team for the next few years. We have to make good decisions in the market. We have a young team and we have potential.

"The second thing I want is to be the coach at this stadium when it's finished. I don't know when it will be finished, but it always has to do with our performances, how we play.

"I like how things work here, it's a big family. We have a lot of energy in the team despite being eliminated from the Champions League. We have to focus on what we have left to achieve in the rest of the season."

Looking ahead to the final matches of the league season, the German added: "It is the only competition left. We have had a couple of days of rest and as I said before, the feeling and the atmosphere is extraordinary.

"We go step by step, game by game, and perform at the highest level. We must learn from the defeats of the past. I see and feel that we can do that."

Celta are sixth in the table, two points behind fifth-placed Real Betis and two ahead of seventh-placed Real Sociedad, though they also suffered a European elimination last week, losing to Freiburg in the Europa League quarter-finals.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Barcelona – Robert Lewandowski

Lewandowski has scored eight goals in seven LaLiga appearances against Celta Vigo; only against Valencia (nine) has he scored more goals in the competition.

Celta Vigo – Iago Aspas

Aspas has scored 11 goals in 22 LaLiga matches against Barcelona, making them his joint-favourite opponent to score against in the competition, alongside Athletic Club.

This is also a record for any player against the Blaugrana in the competition throughout the 21st century.

MATCH PREDICTION – BARCELONA WIN

Barcelona have won each of their last 16 home LaLiga matches, their longest winning streak at home in the competition since November 2017 (W18, 12 under Luis Enrique and six under Ernesto Valverde).

The Blaugrana are also unbeaten in all 59 of their home LaLiga matches played on a Wednesday (W45 D14), the longest home unbeaten run on a specific day by any team in the competition's history.

Furthermore, they have won their last four home LaLiga matches against Celta, their longest winning streak at home against the Galician side since December 1993 (W5).

Celta are big outsiders here, having lost three of their last five LaLiga matches (W1 D1), one more defeat than they suffered in their previous 12 games (W7 D3 L2).

And the home fans should expect entertainment, as Barcelona (51 matches, 136 goals) are on the longest current scoring streak in the five big European leagues, and their longest in LaLiga since October 2013 (64 matches, 198 goals).
