Font: Barcelona cannot attempt to sign Mbappe as there is no money

Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has made clear that Barcelona do not have the financial resources to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

The Frenchman's current deal with PSG expires in 2022 but the two parties have yet to reach an agreement for a potential renewal.

"We cannot aspire to sign Mbappe, because there is no money [to do so]," Font told Transistor.

"We have to check players whose contracts are ending."

Font went on to stress that the elections, which have already been postponed once due to COVID-19 restrictions, should not be moved again as this could potentially hurt the club.

"The elections' delay is not good for Barcelona," added Font.

"After the defeat [to Bayern Munich] in Lisbon we saw clearly that [Lionel] Messi would like to see that there is a sporting project.

"We have tried to bring about a change through the government.

"We were the only ones who asked for systems of alternative voting so that the pandemic does not alter the elections, which are essential to guarantee the right to vote."

Xavi Hernandez has allegedly agreed to return to Barcelona in the event that Font wins the elections and the presidential candidate claimed that his board are willing to give the former Blaugrana the status Sir Alex Ferguson had at Manchester United.

"Xavi is a unique asset, and I told myself that we have to create optimal conditions so that it doesn't happen what happened with [Pep] Guardiola, who came, emptied himself and then left," continued Font.

"After Johan [Cruyff] and Pep, Xavi arrives. People have to know this.

"We want Xavi to be what Ferguson was at Manchester United: coach and general manager."
