Former Real Madrid Castilla and current Panetolikos goalkeeper Jesus Fernandez has criticised the protests in Spain following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA.
Most of the early public demonstrations in Spain revolved around the Spanish government's management of the coronavirus pandemic, but George Floyd's death has triggered a different type of demonstration, with mass anti-racism protests being held all over the globe, including in Spain.
Fernandez has been supportive of the far-right political party VOX on his social media accounts in recent months and the reaction to his comments, both negative and positive, has thrown the goalkeeper into the public consciousness.
"Remember. Those who were demonstrating (by car) over the deaths of 40,000 people and the mismanagement and lies of their government were irresponsible fascists and almost murderers..." Fernandez wrote on his social media accounts, along with a photo of the protest in front of the U.S embassy in Spain and the #AllLivesMatter.
"Those who today protest like this over the death of a person 7,000 km away are defenders of life and equality.
"Hypocrisy and the usual double standard. This is Spain."
