Royston Drenthe, the Dutch soccer standout who once dazzled fans at Real Madrid and Everton, is currently hospitalized in Belgium after suffering a stroke last Friday.
The news was confirmed Sunday by FC De Rebellen, a Belgian club made up of former professional players, where Drenthe had been playing. According to the team’s statement, he is stable and receiving excellent care.
Drenthe receiving the best possible care
FC De Rebellen shared on social media: “Royston is in good hands and receiving the best possible care. The team and everyone involved are hopeful for a swift recovery. His family kindly asks for privacy and peace during this time so they can support him fully.” The message has been echoed by major outlets including Reuters and Dutch sports daily De Telegraaf.
Drenthe, now 38, first burst onto the international scene as a rising star with Feyenoord. His breakout moment came during the 2007 UEFA Under-21 Championship held in the Netherlands, where he led his team to victory and was named the tournament’s MVP.
Later that summer, he signed with Real Madrid, joining Bernd Schuster’s team on a five-year, 14 million euro deal. Despite high expectations, he never fully cemented his place as a top-tier starter and spent time on loan with Hércules in Spain and Everton in England.
Life after Madrid
After leaving Madrid in 2012, Drenthe embarked on a globe-trotting career that took him across Europe and beyond. His journey included stints with Spartak Vladikavkaz (Russia), Sparta Rotterdam (Netherlands), Reading and Sheffield Wednesday (England), Erciyesspor and Alanyaspor (Turkey), Kozakken Boys, Real Murcia, Racing Mérida, Racing Murcia, Xerxes, and Baniyas (UAE).
Highly popular with fans
Known for his versatility and flair, Drenthe remained a fan favorite despite the ups and downs of his career. He officially retired from professional soccer in November 2023.
Drenthe’s sudden health crisis has sparked an outpouring of support from the global soccer community. Everton posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Everyone at Everton wishes Royston Drenthe a full and speedy return to health.” Reading FC also shared their well-wishes, highlighting the impact he had during his time with the club.
As of this morning (Monday, October 20, 2025), Drenthe remains under medical supervision. Fans and former teammates alike are rallying behind him, hoping for a full recovery and respecting his family’s request for privacy during this difficult time.
