Cruz Azul is actively seeking reinforcements for the Apertura 2025 tournament - and one man in their sights is Luka Jovic, a striker who currently plays alongside Mexico’s Santiago Giménez at Italian club AC Milan.
Cruz Azul’s president, Víctor Velázquez, says nothing is concrete yet, but the Liga MX club is hopeful it can finalize a deal soon.
“We hope things will develop”
“We have made some approaches and we hope things will develop in the coming days, and that he will join Cruz Azul,” Velázquez told the media on Wednesday, during an event where a commercial alliance was presented.
Cruz Azul are undergoing a series of changes ahead of the Apertura 2025 tournament and the Intercontinental Cup. Vicente Sánchez was dismissed from his position as head coach, and Nicolás Larcamón will take over after paying the release clause in his contract with Necaxa.
Sánchez’s departure comes despite Cruz Azul’s positive run of results during his tenure. Appointed in January to replace Martín Anselmi, Sánchez led Los Celestes to the Apertura semi-finals and won the CONCACAF Champions Cup, thrashing Vancouver Whitecaps in this months’ final.
“We had talked about closing a chapter”
“We have had a project for more than a year and a half,” Velázquez told reporters. “With Vicente, he came in to replace Martín Anselmi, who, as you know, left the team [for Porto] at the beginning of the tournament.
“We had discussed with Vicente that he would be replacing the coach who had left, and at the end of the tournament, we had talked about closing a chapter.”
