According to Sport, Gerard Martín is set to make his 100th official appearance for Barcelona this Saturday against Getafe. The defender has steadily progressed since joining Barcelona's first team in the summer of 2024. His breakthrough came during preseason under Flick; he previously played for Cornellà in the Segunda División RFEF, and his discipline and willingness to learn helped him make the leap to the top flight.
Martín has appeared 99 times for Barcelona to date, comprising 66 La Liga matches, 20 Champions League appearances, 10 Copa del Rey games, and 3 Supercopa de España fixtures. The defender has been a Barcelona supporter since childhood, as have his parents and grandparents, who have witnessed him fulfill his dream.
Martín initially played as a full-back in the first team. Last season, following Iñigo Martínez's departure, Flick converted him to center-back. Martín previously told Sport: "That was during the Asia tour in Japan. Flick asked me to try playing center-back for one match, and it went well. After that, I started training in that position sometimes. Later, he played me as a center-back in a match, and it worked out great. I've stayed there since."
This is Martín's third season with Barcelona's first team, and he has firmly established himself in central defense. His partnership with Cubarsí has been excellent and has greatly impressed Flick, who has consistently praised Martín as a sponge—always eager to learn and always giving his all.
Looking ahead to the 100-game milestone, Martín told Sport: "I would love to stay here for many more years. I'm about to reach 100 games, and I hope to play another 100 after that—the more the better."
The player, who previously played for Sant Gabriel and Cornellà, has been represented by the same agent throughout his career. He said: "I've been working with the same agent for six or seven years, and now my brother is also helping me, which means a lot to me. There are many interests in this world, but it's important to stay with people who have always been there and supported me from the start. I'm very happy with them. Even though my career has changed significantly, I'm satisfied with them, so there's no reason to change. They've been with me every step of the way."
