Gerard Pique's wages have spent a lot of time in the public eye over the past few weeks and now the contract he signed with Barcelona back in 2018 has been made public.
Earlier this month the veteran centre back reacted furiously to claims he is the club's top earner by publishing his payslip on social media.
The 34-year-old was accused of clearing €14million (£11.7m) a season from the crisis club, by Catalan television presenter Lluis Canut.
But Pique squashed those claims by revealing on Twitter that half his yearly salary, paid to him in December 2021, totalled €2,328,884.39 (£1.94m).
Pique tweeted: 'People like this are paid by public television to defend their friends. Here is 50% of my salary as of 30 December. Have a bit of respect for yourself.'
But now Spanish newspaper SPORT have published details of the deal Pique signed with Barcelona four years ago under the club's former president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
It's claimed they agreed to a €28million-per-year (£23m) deal with a €12m (£10m) bonus if Pique decided to retire.
That was reportedly made up of a fixed gross income of €16m (£13m), as well as a €7.5m (£6.2m) loyalty bonus and €3.3m (£2.7m) in performance-related add-ons.
They also claim that Barcelona financial documents show that when Pique's current deal expires in June 2024, he will collect a portion of €43m (£36m) that has been set aside for players as 'compensation for termination of contract'.
Pique was one of three key players to take a pay cut to help Barcelona try and balance the books.
Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets also handed back a portion of their salaries to allow Barcelona to register their summer signings, which included Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.
In October 2020, it was revealed that Barca were on the verge of bankruptcy when Joan Laporta replaced Bartomeu as president.
The economic mire Barcelona find themselves in was laid bare with the club recording a £409million (€481m) loss 2020-21, with overall debts exceeding £1billion.
The club revealed that they lost more than £400m in the 2020-21 campaign after revenue decreased and expenses went up.
The LaLiga outfit's revenue dropped by 26 per cent with just £537m brought in, compared to £727m the season before as fans were shut out from games with the stadium unable to open, given the Covid crisis.
The club's expenses rose by 19 per cent from £812million to £1billion, despite making savings through players - including Pique, Busquets and Alaba - agreeing to take hefty pay cuts.
As a result, the club posted £384m worth of debt by June while debts in recent seasons are believed to have already totalled more than £1.1bn.
Their problems are not yet fixed with Barcelona facing a race against time to adjust their finances accordingly to allow Alvaro Morata to register for the club, with their pursuit of the Juventus striker reportedly at risk of falling through due to Financial Fair Play (FFP).
