Diego Godin scored Atletico Madrid's first goal in a 2-0 win over Girona at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday.
The Uruguayan centre-back was left in suspense after he had nodded the ball into the net, with Antoine Griezmann deemed offside, but VAR overruled the decision.
Godin was mightily relieved as he believes that the system has made mistakes in the past.
"Luckily VAR did justice, other times it gets it wrong," he said after the game.
Ultimately, the 33-year-old was happy to get another three points on the board against a team they had drawn against in their last five meetings.
"We are happy with the victory against a difficult rival," he told reporters in the mixed zone after the game.
"We had to get the win. We knew it would be complicated.
"I'm obviously happy to have helped, it served to open the scoring," he said.
