It’s 1-1 at the break in the Derby della Lanterna, as Jakub Jankto’s Sampdoria rocket was cancelled out by Gianluca Scamacca’s first goal for Genoa.

The Blucerchiati were the favourites coming into this derby, having won three consecutive Serie A games, with Manolo Gabbiadini the only absentee and Antonio Candreva fit for the bench. The Grifone were finally free of COVID-19, but Stefano Sturaro, Francesco Cassata, Davide Zappacosta and Eldor Shomurodov were injured. Rolando Maran changed their tactics, scrapping the three-man defence for a 4-3-2-1 with Gianluca Scamacca’s first start.

Goran Pandev drilled wide after a Scamacca flick, but Samp took the lead with a moment of magic from Jakub Jankto. The midfielder cut inside from the right and unleashed a left-foot rocket into the far top corner from outside the box.

Genoa almost equalised soon after, when Cristian Zapata’s header on a corner seemed to be looping into the net until Emil Audero at full stretch palmed it off the line.

The goal did come moments later, as there was a poor clearance, Lukas Lerager nodded it back into the box and Scamacca immediately turned to drill the angled drive across the face of goal. It was the Italy Under-21 international’s debut Serie A goal.

Morten Thorsby turned a fairly free header wide from six yards, but Genoa created a big chance when Scamacca’s back-heel flick set up Nicola Rovella for a shot deflected wide.
