Glenn Hoddle compared Nathan Redmond's superb solo goal in Southampton's FA Cup quarter-final win over Bournemouth to Michael Owen's 1998 strike for England against Argentina.

Redmond's wonderful run and cool finish just seconds before the half-time whistle was the first of two goals for the Saints in their 3-0 victory over their south coast rivals which booked a Wembley appearance for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

The Southampton winger picked up the ball just inside his own half and burst away from Bournemouth defender Sergio Rico, then put Steve Cook on the floor with a clever jink before smashing past Asmir Begovic from inside the box.

Hoddle claims the goal is reminiscent of Owen's superb solo goal for the BT Sport commentator's England squad back in 1998 which announced the then-teenage striker on the world stage.

Hoddle said whilst commentating on the goal: 'What a finish from Redmond. He's kept his cool. A little stepover, Cook goes down and what a finish. Michael Owen-ish against Argentina.'

Redmond had earlier set up Moussa Djenepo to put Southampton in front at the Vitality Stadium before the solo strike gave the Saints a two-goal lead at half-time.

The winger then added his second of the game and Southampton's third which sealed safe passage to the semi-final stage.

BT Sport pundits Peter Crouch and Jermaine Jenas both praised Redmond for the run and finish for his first of the afternoon but slammed Jonathan Woodgate's Bournemouth side over their defending.

At half-time of the match Crouch said: 'It was a great run by Redmond (for second goal) not sure where Rico the left-back is going.

'He's going in beyond the centre-halves and does absolutely nothing and then Redmond is away.

'Jonathan Woodgate will be so disappointed defensively but it was a delightful run from Redmond.'

Jenas added: 'I think Cook should do better there. It's a one versus one, it's the trickery from Redmond that sends him over but he needs to stay on his feet and get him right away from goal but as soon as he goes over then the goal is at Redmond's mercy.'

Southampton manager Hasenhuttl was full of praise for Redmond after his brace and assist helped his side to reach just their fourth FA Cup semi-final in 35 years.

The Austrian said: 'The first goal is a fantastic pass from Reddy and then he scores two goals.

'I mean he had a difficult year with the performances and the injuries he's had. I'm hoping this game gives him a lift so he can shows more the quality he has and that's important to our game.'
