Los Blancos are looking to win their sixth UEFA Super Cup title.
Real Madrid and Atalanta will face off at the Kazimierz Górski National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland, to determine the next UEFA Super Cup champion.
The last team to lift the trophy was 2022/23 UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City, who beat Sevilla 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the extra time. Carlo Ancelotti’s side is looking to keep making history, as a win will make Real Madrid the team with the most UEFA Super Cup titles.
On the other hand, Atalanta wants to keep dreaming of their outstanding underdog path. The Italians trashed 3-0 favorites Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League final with an impressive hat trick from Ademola Lookman and want to make a statement by defeating the successful European club.
How many times have Real Madrid and Atalanta faced off?
As expected, this is a game that football fans haven’t seen that much in the past, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t played against each other.
The only time both teams faced each other was during the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League round of 16. Los Blancos qualified first from Group B despite their shaky start, where they lost against Shakhtar and drew against Borussia Mönchengladbach. On the other hand, Atalanta qualified second from Group D with 11 points, being only two behind group leaders Liverpool.
At an empty Atalanta stadium because of the pandemic, the two teams played the first leg of the round of 16. Los Blancos edged it with a late Mendy strike. However, the game left plenty to talk about because of Remo Freuler’s early red card, which saw Atalanta playing with ten men for over 80 minutes.
Real Madrid improved for the second leg at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium. Zinedine Zidane’s team won 3-1 thanks to goals from Benzema, Sergio Ramos (pen.) and Marco Asensio. Colombian striker Luis Muriel scored for the visitors, and Atalanta’s hopes of making the quarter finals vanished prematurely.
