Iker Casillas returns to Real Madrid

  /  autty

Iker Casillas returns to Real Madrid, five years after leaving the club for Porto.

The legendary goalkeeper is ready to call time on his playing career and is preparing himself to step into his first position away from the pitch.

Casillas will work closely with Florentino Perez as an advisor in a position that will be further defined in the coming weeks.

The important thing is that Florentino want to keep Casillas close, and Iker agrees.

It will be similar to the role played by Zinedine Zidane in his day.

Now 39 and practically retired since suffering a heart attack during a training session with Porto on May 1, 2019, Casillas is waiting for his current club to contest the Taca de Portugal final against Benfica on August 1 before officially announcing his departure.

It is worth noting that Casillas has been extremely happy at Porto and has won three trophies with the club, with the latest coming on Wednesday as they secure the Liga NOS title, although this success largely came with the goalkeeper playing a liaison role between the squad and the board.

Despite this, Casillas' real club - the place where his heart truly lies - is Real Madrid, and he is now returning to help Florentino in a project that both are very excited about.

The Real Madrid president knows full well that Iker is an asset of the club, a leading figure, and he wants to integrate him into his management team.

Gone are the episodes from the past, such as Casillas' sad farewell through the back door five years ago; this is a new chapter from which both of them eventually acknowledged their mistakes.

Fortunately, this is all in the past and what counts now is that, in recent months, the good harmony between Florentino and Real Madrid's second all-time appearance holder (725 games) has been consolidated and forged during a meeting.

Within the club's organisational chart

On Thursday, during the discreet and strange celebration of Real Madrid's LaLiga Santander title at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, Florentino once again repeated that there might not be signings this summer, but he was referring to the first-team squad.

The arrival of Iker Casillas is on track and its certain that when the 2020/21 campaign gets underway in mid-September, the legendary Real Madrid captain and a member of the best Spain team of all time, will be part of Los Blancos' organisational chart. Five years later, Casillas is coming back home.
