In Matchday 3 of the Champions League group stage, Liverpool will host Villarreal at Anfield. Having already secured two consecutive victories in the competition, Liverpool has compiled 14 notable statistics ahead of the match on its official website.

Liverpool and Villarreal have met four times previously, all in European semi-finals: the 2015-16 Europa League semi-final and the 2021-22 Champions League semi-final.

2. Liverpool have won 15 of their last 16 Champions League group stage or knockout matches at Anfield.

3. This will be Liverpool's 59th encounter with a Spanish club. Liverpool have faced Spanish opposition more often than teams from any other country in European competitions.

4. Iraola scored the final goal of his career in May 2015, helping Athletic Club to a 4-0 victory over Villarreal.

5. Liverpool have won each of their last seven Champions League group-stage or knockout matches against Spanish teams, keeping clean sheets in four of the last six.

6. Araujo has faced Villarreal seven times, winning five of those matches.

7. During his time at Real Sociedad, Isak faced Villarreal five times and scored three goals.

8. Liverpool have not drawn any of their last 45 European matches. Their last draw in European competition was a 3-3 draw against Benfica at Anfield in April 2022.

9. All six of Mac Allister’s Champions League goals have come at Anfield.

10. Liverpool have played in European competitions four times on October 20 but are yet to secure a victory on this date. The four matches include a home draw against Bayern in 1971, an away loss to Trabzonspor in 1976, a draw against Valencia at Anfield in 1998, and a home loss to Lyon in 2009.

11. Villarreal defeated Napoli 3-1 at home a week ago, ending a 12-match winless run in the Champions League proper. They had recorded two draws and ten losses in those previous 12 games, including a seven-match losing streak. It was the team's first victory in their last 13 matches in the competition proper.

12. Villarreal have played in England 11 times but have secured only one victory. That win came in a 2005 Champions League qualifier, when the Yellow Submarine beat Everton 2-1 away.

13. Villarreal goalkeeper Gulácsi played for Liverpool from 2008 to 2013. During his time at the club, he was named on the bench 51 times but never made an official appearance for Liverpool.

14. Villarreal's head coach, Iñigo Pérez, took over the team this summer. In the 2022-23 season, he served as Iraola's assistant coach at Rayo Vallecano.
