Jamie Carragher: I hope Alexander-Arnold returns, his departure from Liverpool was a big mistake

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wants Alexander-Arnold back at Anfield and praises Jérémy Jacquet's start under Iraola.

Speaking about Alexander-Arnold on the show, Jamie Carragher said: "At the moment, he's actually only Real Madrid's third-choice right-back. They even played a midfielder at right-back in the Clásico, with the starting right-back coming on as a substitute. So when you're only the third choice at a club, it's clear they want you to leave."

"I'd like him back. I think he made a big mistake when he left. But if there's something that can benefit Liverpool Football Club in the future, when you think about Liverpool's problems at right-back..."

"Trent has been playing very well, but we do have issues with full-back distribution. We definitely miss his creativity."

In the summer, another Liverpool defender, Konate, also transferred to Real Madrid, which immediately elevated Jérémy Jacquet, signed for £60 million, to a starting centre-back role alongside Van Dijk.

Jamie Carragher believes the French international is already better than the departed Konate.

"It has to do with Van Dijk's age too, but it almost feels like he's the first centre-back to start proactively supporting Van Dijk, rather than the other way around."

"Even though he's only played eight Premier League games, I already feel he's better than any partner Van Dijk has had."

"I know it's early days, but he certainly looks the part, doesn't he? Van Dijk will need a partner like this eventually, and at some point, he just needs to play his own game."

"He can't look after the entire defense anymore, nor can he babysit his centre-back partner. I think we're at that stage now: Van Dijk is still playing well, but he should just focus on his own game."
