Jose Mourinho has aimed a sly dig at Roma's owners in a farewell post to fans after his shock sacking.

The former Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham manager was was relieved of his duties with the Serie A side, who sit ninth in the league table, despite asking for a new contract.

Today, Italian papers marked his sacking by writing 'the capital is in shock' at the dismissal of a coach who 'wrote an unforgettable story' by guiding the club to two European finals.

Now, Mourinho - who was yesterday spotted leaving the training ground with tears in his eyes - has delivered a cryptic farewell message to the fans.

Posting several photos during his time at the club on Instagram, he captioned it by saying: 'Sudore, sangue, lacrime, allegria, tristezza, amoR, fratelli, storia, cuore, eternità.'

This translated to: 'Sweat, blood, tears, joy, sadness, love, brothers, history, heart, eternity.' But, particular attention was paid to the 'amoR', which read backwards reads: 'Roma.'

Playing over the Instagram post was also a song from the film Gladiator called 'Nelle Tue Mani' by Andrea Bocelli.

Translated into English, that means 'now we are free', which could certainly be a sly dig at the owners following the sixth sacking of his career.

Having won just one of their last six games, his final game in charge was Sunday's 3-1 defeat to AC Milan which he was forced to watch from the stands due to suspension.

The veteran manager won Roma fans over in his first season by winning the Europa Conference League, and led his side to the final of the Europa League last term, before they lost to Sevilla on penalties.

But Roma have fallen away badly in 2023-24 and currently sit ninth in Serie A, forcing the board to step in and relieve Mourinho of his duties.

He leaves with a record of 60 wins, 30 draws and 40 losses from his 138 games in charge.

He took an average of 1.7 points per game across his tenure, dropping to 1.45 this season, and according to a report by Calcio&Finanza, every point earned by Roma cost the club €3.5m (£3m) when taking into account the salaries of the players and coaches as well as the length of their contracts.

Roma's total of 29 points from their 20 games this term is their worst return since 2002-03 under Fabio Capello.

Taking Mourinho's place is Roma legend Daniele De Rossi, who has made more than 600 appearances for the side.
