Kansas City Chiefs' JuJu Smith-Schuster threw it back to 2015 by pulling out Wayne Rooney's famous boxing celebration in their 34-28 win over the Denver Broncos Sunday.

The wide receiver was found by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the endzone after the Broncos threatened a rally just after halftime.

Smith-Schuster saw it as the perfect moment to perform Rooney's celebration from Manchester United's 3-0 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League seven years ago.

He went over to the corner of the field, boxed the air before falling straight back as if he'd been knocked out, just like the England soccer legend did after finding the net at Old Trafford.

Smith-Schuster shared a clip of the touchdown and celebration on his Twitter profile, writing: 'Hitting the @WayneRooney, tag him.'

The former striker saw the post and seemed to enjoy the tribute, quote Tweeting it with a crying laughing face emoji and an OK and closed-fist hand emojis.

Rooney's celebration at the time poked fun at a boxing video which emerged in the build-up to United's match.

It was his response to revelations that he had been knocked out while boxing in his own kitchen.

British newspaper The Sun publicized footage of the former United star being floored by a punch from then-Stoke defender Phil Bardsley.

The two soccer players donned boxing gloves before taking part in a sparring session. Rooney was hit by a jab and hit the deck flat onto his back.

Rooney was less than impressed that video, filmed inside his home, was made public.

'That's the world we live in today,' Rooney said postgame. 'It was a few mates in a private house which has somehow managed to get on the front page of a national newspaper. I have to accept that. It was me and a few friends joking around.

'It's my own home, I know it's got out but it's not public. It's what friends do. They mess around in the house and unfortunately it has made the front page of a national newspaper.

'I've just been focused on the game, it's more interesting for other people rather than for myself. You've seen that I've done a professional job, got on with the game and gladly helped my team win 3-0.'
