L'Équipe: Thunderstorms threaten to disrupt France vs. Iraq World Cup match

According to L'Équipe, the match between France and Iraq may be affected by thunderstorms.

France's second FIFA World Cup group stage match against Iraq is scheduled for 5:00 AM Beijing time on June 23 (CEST). However, heavy rain is expected in Philadelphia, the match venue, which could disrupt play. France is particularly concerned about thunderstorms that could cause lengthy interruptions.

While heavy rain itself is manageable, thunderstorms pose the real threat. Initial forecasts suggested major thunderstorms could occur during the local afternoon match time. However, the latest forecast indicates the heaviest precipitation may be delayed until Philadelphia's evening, potentially sparing the match, though this remains uncertain.

FIFA World Cup regulations regarding weather are stringent. If lightning is detected within 13 kilometers of the stadium, the match is immediately suspended and players must return to the locker room. A 30-minute countdown then begins; if no new lightning strikes occur during this period, play resumes. If lightning reappears, the countdown restarts. This cycle continues until 30 consecutive minutes pass without any lightning near the stadium.

Precedent exists for weather-related delays at major tournaments. During last summer's Club World Cup in the United States, several matches were affected by storms. Chelsea's round of 16 match against Benfica was interrupted for approximately two hours due to thunderstorms, extending the total match duration to 4 hours and 38 minutes.
