LaLiga stadiums are emptying

  /  autty

Attendances in football are an interesting phenomenon, and a recent study into 26 leagues since the years 2004 have shown that LaLiga Santander stadiums are actually emptying.

This may seem strange, but in an era of rising ticket prices and increased midweek matches, fans appear to be turning away from a sport that has rapidly turned into a commercial product.

The aforementioned study was conducted by the CIES Football Observatory, and the report suggested that the Spanish top flight ranks third in terms of average attendance over the past five seasons, with 27,381 fans.

Only the Bundesliga and Premier League can top that, however the average influx to Spanish stadiums has decreased by 7 percent since the year 2004.

In 2004-2008 the influx of fans to Spanish stadiums was 29,510, this dropped to 28,337 between 2009-2013 and now in the years 2014-2018 we can see the previously mentioned 27,381 fans.

Rather worryingly, both the Bundesliga and the Premier League has seen a rise of 11% and 6 percent respectively over the same 15-year period.

However, this may be down to increase capacities at various stadiums, especially in England, whilst the Italian Serie A has seen a decrease of less than 1 percent.

Borussia Dortmund appear the team to follow with their average attendance coming at over 80,000 spectators per home match, and they are ahead of their nearest challengers Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
